Research Summary

Alp Durmus is the head of the Lighting Laboratory in the Department Architectural of Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. His research is focused on adaptive and next generation illumination systems, color science, and the interaction between occupants and built environments with respect to a wide range of applications on energy consumption, user interaction, and environmental impacts. The Lighting Lab facilitates cross-disciplinary research to address socioeconomic, sociotechnical, and socio-cognitive aspects of illumination design. His research team conducts experiments both in fundamental and applied scientific disciplines. Fundamental research enabled by the lab is aimed to improve the understanding of the human response to visual stimuli, while the applied research explores novel ways of utilizing this basic knowledge to design, operate, optimize, and maintain lighting systems. Ongoing research topics include, but not limited to, multi-primary LED system characterization, impact of light on circadian rhythm, ecological and health impacts of light pollution, projection mapping for art conservation, and image quality assessment for indoor environment evaluation.
