Taylor’s research legacy shines light on California wildfires, forest ecology

But he got his start protecting the habitats of two endangered species — the mountain gorilla and the giant panda — before moving his research to the United States. That transition to the dense, dry forests of California wasn't happenstance. It took a civil war for him to make the shift.
