Agricultural landscapes in the United States (US) are becoming drastically simplified and commodified, causing concern for biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, and widening socioeconomic injustices upon which US agriculture has been built. Given that crop production is heavily concentrated in certain areas and crop diversity is declining, there is a critical need to understand pathways toward diversifying agricultural systems and increasing agrobiodiversity writ large.

PAWS is a group for students (undergraduate and graduate) and post-docs who are interested and/or involved in water issues and research activities. We aim to foster our water community here at Penn State through career development, educational, skills building, and volunteer events.
Department of Geosciences Colloquium Series presents Brady Flinchum, Clemson University.
The spring 2022 EESI EarthTalks series, "Energy and Climate Policy, Part 2: Strategies for Getting to Net Zero," will focus on policies and technologies that could help slow down global warming and reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions. The series will be held in conjunction with EARTH 400, a course for students who wish to pursue these topics in greater depth.
In this talk, Villar will discuss the astronomical hunt for anomalies, and how understanding the rare classes of cosmic explosions uniquely leads us to understanding the origins of heavy elements in the universe.
Presented by Ashley Villar, assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State.
As research cyberinfrastructure grows rapidly in diversity, scale, and complexity, hardware resource management and application execution optimization are becoming increasingly challenging. The goals of this workshop are to bring together stakeholders to:
identify problems with current approaches to infrastructure management and application optimization
identify what role AI/ML can potentially play in addressing these problems
discuss potential opportunities for teaming
Who should attend?
Please join up to 30 minutes early to network and “find a seat” as industry presentations will begin promptly at 2:00 p.m.
Presented by the Penn State Materials Research Institute, the Materials Spotlight Series is designed to create connections and spark discussions between industry and Penn State faculty and students that lead to productive research collaborations.
Genetics and its many subfields have made strides in their attempt to define the flow of information that underlies how living things operate. This has created a landscape full of intrigue, complexity, and controversy, as we deal squarely with who we are as a species, and most importantly, what underlies the differences in phenotypes and fates.
Abstract: Globally, many inland lakes are shrinking due to water scarcity. In some arid regions, reduced runoff from irrigated agriculture is a leading contributing factor to lake shrinkage. As inland lakes contract, playa dust emissions from receding shorelines create regional air quality problems with associated negative effects on human health. A coupling thus exists between runoff from irrigated agriculture and pollution-health outcomes through inland lake extent.

Please join us for Water Cooler Talk: Microplastics and Environmental Health as we gather around the virtual water cooler as one collective water resource community. During this talk, we will provide a discussion of the accumulation of microplastics in environmental matrices in a drinking water reservoir and surrounding watershed located in central Pennsylvania.
