The blackout left millions of Texans in the cold and dark for the better part of a week, costing billions of dollars in damages and more than 100 lives. There will also be a discussion on how the unavailability of natural gas-fired power, and of natural gas, was one of several causes of the crisis. There will be a specific focus on the role of natural gas in Texas’ competitive electricity markets.

Penn State Alumni Association Virtual Speaker Session Buildings play an enormous role in our everyday lives and present an important opportunity to promote the sustainability and well-being of society. This talk will highlight key areas where smart building technologies can help address pressing climate change-related issues. Solutions being developed within Penn State Architectural Engineering will be discussed, along with several challenges and barriers to adoption of such technologies.

Presented by Chris Blaszczak-Boxe, Penn State Abstract: I will give a brief overview of the health impacts of poor air quality and then talk about a small case study of individual participant daily exposure to coarse (PM10) and fine (PM2.5) particulate matter. I will conclude by talking about near-future deliverables, such as quantifying such exposure levels to select adverse health conditions (e.g., various forms of cancer, respiratory and cardiovascular disease) and long-term deliverables, such as scalable low-cost air quality sensor technology.
