Digital fairness is a crucial consideration for any scientist who relies on computation. Who owns artificial intelligence models and who owns the data in those models? What biases are unintentionally embedded in the models? How transparent are the data manipulation processes? How reproducible are the results? The answer to these questions could have a myriad of impacts on both the science being conducted and the communities that could potentially benefit from these investigations.

Energy and Environmental Economics and Policy Seminar Ellen Bruno is an assistant cooperative extension specialist in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. She conducts research and outreach on economic and policy issues relevant to California’s agriculture and natural resources, with a particular focus on groundwater. She holds a Ph.D. in agricultural and resource economics from the University of California, Davis, and a B.S. in management science from the University of California, San Diego.

Water contamination is ubiquitous and persists across our water resources and supply. Much attention is given to newly identified and emerging contaminants, but we also struggle to successfully mitigate “old,” or well-known, contaminants, which have included ammonia, nitrate, and, more recently, phosphate in municipal wastewaters. However, these compounds are also critical nutrients used to support the global industrialized agriculture sector.

Fires burn in all terrestrial ecosystems on the globe, and wildfires are getting larger, more destructive and deadly. Both humans and climate are contributing to this trend. The Fall 2021 EESI EarthTalks series, “Fire in the Earth System,” will address humanity’s long relationship with fire, how humans and climate create conditions conducive to megafires, and how policy makers and land managers can address the fire problem. The seminars, which are free and open to the public, take place from 4 – 5 p.m. on Mondays via Zoom.
