Water reuse is an essential activity for clean water agencies of the future. While effluent discharge to waterways predominates in water-rich  regions, Penn State University has over five decades of research and  experience in reclaiming its wastewater effluent for forest and crop irrigation and groundwater recharge through its Living Filter system, which is also challenged by its folded and faulted karstic hydrogeologic setting.

Over the last several decades, it has become clear that urbanization has had major adverse impacts on the hydrology and water quality of downstream water bodies. An increasingly popular solution for managing stormwater has been implementation of green infrastructure solutions, such as retention basins, constructed wetlands, or bioswales. Here I discuss some of my work at the site scale evaluating biogeochemical function of different types of green infrastructure, with insights from field investigation in New York and Pennsylvania, including right here in State College.

How are corporations influenced by large scale local street protests? Focusing on the wave of Women’s Marches in the U.S. from 2017 to 2020, we find S&P 1500 firms were more likely to add female directors to their corporate boards following larger street protests in their headquarters locale. We argue this proximal-protest effect reflects existing boards interpreting street protests as signals of relative local support for the national women’s movement—signals to which they can respond by prioritizing gender equity in their own ranks.

The Chesapeake Bay Watershed foodscape is a complex system that is providing food for over 18 million residents of the watershed and to people around the world. The science is clear that to meet our biodiversity goals in the Chesapeake, we must reduce nutrient and sediment loss from agricultural lands. Additionally, climate change is going to make this harder due to increased precipitation and heavy rain events.
