Since the development of the polymers industry, plastics have become a widely accepted packaging option worldwide for good reason - these materials are known their high strength, light weight, extraordinary flexibility, low energy usage and low toxicity. But these same materials that offer so many societal advantages are also under increasing environmental scrutiny due largely to gaps in the infrastructure required to handle post use materials.
Water reuse is an essential activity for clean water agencies of the future. While effluent discharge to waterways predominates in water-rich regions, Penn State University has over five decades of research and experience in reclaiming its wastewater effluent for forest and crop irrigation and groundwater recharge through its Living Filter system, which is also challenged by its folded and faulted karstic hydrogeologic setting.
This year's Colloquium on the Environment speaker is L. Hunter Lovins, president and founder of Natural Capitalism Solutions, a non-profit founded in 2002 to champion sustainable development.
This event is part of the Penn State EnvironMentors Spring 2022 Webinar Series aimed at introducing high school students to the EnvironMentors program.
