For a long time it was accepted that decadal predictability in the ocean arose from the slow time scales associated with oceanic circulations, particularly the Meridional Overtuning Circulation.  However, this explanation has been challenged recently.  In this talk, I will review this history and discuss mechanisms for decadal predictability that do not involve active ocean dynamics.

Numerous papers have analyzed the effectiveness of incentivizing grocery chains to open stores in underserved locations on minimizing food insecurity and low food access; however, results show mixed success. One minimally studied policy lever for addressing the food insecurity and low food access problem affecting millions of U.S households is leveraging trust within a community. Trust within the community regarding food access can be gauged in a variety of ways including the reputation of or past experiences with grocery stores at a location.

More than 50% of global wetland area has been lost over the last 200 years, resulting in losses of habitat and species diversity as well as decreased hydrologic and biogeochemical functionality. Recognition of the magnitude of wetland loss as well as the wide variety of ecosystem services provided by wetlands has in recent decades led to an increased focus on wetland restoration. Restoration activities, however, often proceed in an ad hoc manner, with a focus on maximizing the total restored area rather than on other spatial attributes of the wetland network.
