The Choose Native project is a collaboration between the Great Lakes Commission (GLC), Pennsylvania Sea Grant, and Penn State Extension. Pennsylvania Sea Grant worked with the Great Lakes Commission to apply for funding through the Richard King Mellon Foundation which was awarded in January 2023. The primary focus of the project is preventing invasive species introductions through the organisms in trade (OIT) pathway, mainly targeting the landscaping and water gardening industry.

Join us for an informative webinar on the C-CHANGE Grass2Gas project, funded by the USDA-NIFA's Sustainable Agricultural Systems program. Its aim is to explore how perennial and winter crops can be employed more extensively as feedstock for anaerobic digestion while also aligning with objectives related to environmental protection, rural economic development, and national energy security.
NTM Engineering and Villanova University have completed the Post Construction Stormwater Management Manual (PCSM Manual) for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP). The manual has been reviewed, public comments are being addressed, and the manual will be released early 2024. The PCSM Manual contains new policy, new guidance, new ways to design and build SCMs, addresses climate adaption, promote natural landscapes as stormwater mitigation, and proposes changes to how infiltration is sited, constructed, and protected.

Technologies such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality (VR, AR, and MR) are becoming more ubiquitous and accessible. However, how they can be implemented and utilized in universities and industries is still being explored. The Center for Immersive Experiences will be making available virtual and mixed-reality headsets, 360 cameras, and devices for capturing LIDAR data. So, you can get a hands-on experience with this new immersive frontier.
As Pennsylvania’s land-grant (and sea-, sun-, and space-grant) institution, Penn State has always emphasized the "practical or theoretical aspects" of our work.
Migration is historically a human mechanism for survival. In the face of armed conflict and climate crises, migration is an adaptive solution for the populations affected by crises. As long as conflict and crises prevail, migration will happen.
The College of the Liberal Arts will host a panel discussion on Environment and Health on Monday, November 13 at 2:30 p.m. in 129 Waring Commons.
Penn State GIS Day strives to bring together those who are working with GIS, geospatial technologies, remote sensing, maps, and location-based research in order to foster greater geospatial awareness on campus, within the community, and beyond. A recent analysis projects that over two million metric tons of wind turbine blades will reach the end of their operational lifetime by 2050. Currently, most of these blades are being sent to landfill where any remaining value in the blades is left unrecovered. Recognizing this issue, researchers have proposed a range of recycling approaches for wind turbine blades. However, it is still unclear what additional research and development needs to be completed to enable recycling of wind turbine blades at full scale.
Laura Guertin, distinguished professor of Earth sciences at Penn State Bradywine, will give the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences’ 2023 Lattman Visiting Scholar of Science and Society Lecture. The lecture will be held from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, in 401 Steidle Building on the University Park campus. A reception following the talk will be held in the Steidle Atrium. The event is free and open to the public.
