Ukraine Series: War and Ukraine's Rivers, Wetlands, and Seas

Analyzing the aftermath of Europe's largest dam destruction in Ukraine, exploring impacts on ecosystems, post-war landscape recovery, and future river and fish management scenarios.

During Ukraine Series: War and Ukraine’s Rivers, Wetlands and Seas, attendees will learn about how Russia's invasion, particularly the detonation of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Dam, has impacted the ecology of the Dnipro River and the Black Sea. Leading Ukrainian experts will discuss not only the dire ecological consequences for endemic riparian species and the maritime environment but also the unique large-scale "rewilding" of the former Kakhovka Reservoir, one of Europe's largest. Will it be a wasteland, or will the historic "Great Meadow of the Dnipro" and its riparian forests return? Participants will also learn how they can support work in these challenging spaces.
