Join the Sustainability Institute in kicking off our 2023-24 Intersections film series (and the Landscapes of Labor sub-strand within the film series), with our series opener — the classic 1940 Grapes of Wrath. Based upon John Steinbeck’s classic, best-selling novel, this Academy Award-winning film tells the story of the Joads, a family of “Okies” fleeing the Dust Bowl for promise of better work in the fields of California. A poignant, moving and beautifully-filmed look at this hard time in American history, the film remains extremely relevant today for its tale of climate refugees and the struggle to protect the rights and dignity of agricultural workers.
As a bonus – we’re screening this first film OUTDOORS on a giant screen on the main lawn of the Arboretum at Penn State. Bring your blankets or chairs (and a bowl for popcorn) and join us for this night under the stars!
Co-sponsored by the Arboretum at Penn State, Ross Student Farm, Center for Global Workers’ Rights, and WPSU.
Event starts at 7:30 p.m. (EDT) on Wednesday, August 30 (rain/weather makeup date: Wednesday, September 6 at 7:30 p.m. (EDT)). Free and open to all – pre-register for reminders and updates.
