Hurricane Agnes was a formative event in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The scale of the devastation was unparalleled and caused the Bay community to take a long look at business as usual and determine how we could better prepare for extreme events. The Chesapeake Research Consortium was born out of this desire to understand the environmental impacts and build resilience after Agnes. We’ve had 50 years since the storm shifted the conversation – what have we learned about the Bay watershed and responding to the environmental impacts of intense storms?

The effort to enhance electricity consumers’ production of services for the grid is now decades old. States such as New York, California, and Hawaii have rolled out “prosumer” initiatives that aim to make consumers both producers and consumers of electricity, providing small-scale alternatives to centralized generation and new transmission investments.
This workshop—the first of three— will describe the core elements of stakeholder engagement we used in this project, the accomplishments of the local teams, methodologies for assessing outcomes, and core findings related to outcomes across individual, organizational, and community change.
This workshop will describe insights we gained about the challenges and opportunities of trans-disciplinary,multi-institutional team science and identify some critical questions and tensions in this kind of project.
