With 36 years of experience at Penn State as a researcher and educator in weed and vegetation management, Art Gover specializes in handling invasive species in natural settings. Now retired, he continues to share his expertise as a volunteer with the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward program. Gover, based in Centre County, recently earned the 2023 Natural Resource Education Champion Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals.
Female sandhill crane is newest resident of aviary at Shaver’s Creek

A young sandhill crane named Jane is the newest animal ambassador at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. The crane, which came to the Klingsberg Aviary at Shaver’s Creek from a rescue center in Wisconsin, represents a major step toward diversifying the aviary from its origins as a raptor center, said Paige Sutherland, wildlife education program director.

World Campus student participates in UN climate change conference held in Dubai

Olivia McMahon participated in a panel about local climate change action and was part of the Penn State delegation at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s 28th annual Conference of Parties, or COP28.
Once a frozen haven, climate-driven rising temperatures are rapidly thawing the Arctic permafrost, posing a major threat to communities and infrastructure. Researchers are investigating how these changes will transform rivers, with potential consequences for erosion, sediment transport, and the entire Arctic landscape.
