Libraries announces July workshops for scholarly communications, copyright

Beginning July 11, Penn State University Libraries will offer virtual workshops on scholarly communications and copyright topics for students, faculty and staff. The workshops include a two-part Introduction to Copyright, a session on Penn State’s open access policy, and a workshop about copyright for authors of theses and dissertations. Registration is free but required for all workshops.

IceCube Observatory produces first image of the Milky Way using neutrinos

For the first time, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory has produced an image of the Milky Way galaxy using neutrinos. In an article published in the journal Science, the IceCube Collaboration, an international group of over 350 scientists, including Penn State researchers, presents evidence of high-energy neutrino emission from the Milky Way.

NASA Pennsylvania Space Grant announces its 2023 fellowship, scholarship winners

Thirteen graduate students from Penn State have been awarded research fellowships and nine undergraduate students from Commonwealth have been awarded scholarships from the Pennsylvania Space Grant Consortium.

Penn State rises 10 places in 2024 QS World University Rankings

Penn State ranked No. 83 in the world — a jump of 10 positions from No. 93 last year — in the recently released 2024 QS World University Rankings, placing the University in the top 6% worldwide among the 1,500 institutions ranked by QS. Penn State also placed, out of 199 ranked U.S. institutions, at No. 8 among public universities nationally and No. 4 among Big Ten institutions. Penn State rose to No. 24 among all U.S. universities, up from No. 26 last year.

After more than 25 years as a leader in the Penn State College of Engineering, including the past year as acting and then interim dean, Anthony Atchley will retire as professor emeritus of acoustics on June 30.

Penn State Global announces Collaboration Program awards with Auckland

Penn State and the University of Auckland in New Zealand have announced the awarded grants of the second round of the Collaboration Program, a jointly financed seed program with the aim to collaborate on research and education projects. The first cycle of the program provided funding to eight projects. The two institutions committed these seed funds for a second round and funded two projects centered on the following UN Sustainable Development Goals: SDG3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG4: Quality Education, SDG11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG13: Climate Action.   

Penn State Global announces Collaboration Program awards with Monash University

Penn State and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, announced the awarded grants of the third round of the Collaboration Program, a jointly financed seed program with the aim to collaborate on research and education projects. The first two cycles of the program provided funding to 34 projects. The two institutions committed these seed funds for a third round, and funded five projects around the topic of Global Challenges or Matters of Bilateral Importance to Australia and the United States.  

College of IST Dean Andrew Sears announces departure

Andrew Sears, dean of the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), has announced his departure from the University, effective July 31. Sears will assume the position of dean of the Syracuse University School of Information Studies (iSchool) on Aug. 1.
