Earlier this month, Penn State hosted South African politician, anti-apartheid activist, medical doctor and businesswoman Dr. Mamphela Ramphele for a series of events focused on sustainability and global change. Ramphele's visit and the associated events resulted from the collective efforts of Penn State Sustainability, the Africana Research Center, the Center for Global Studies, the Institute of Energy and the Environment, and Penn State Global.

Global Alumni Spotlight: Luis Alejandro Vergara

A career in sustainable agriculture was not what Luis Alejandro Vergara, who earned a bachelor's degree in environmental systems engineering from Penn State in 2017, had originally envisioned for himself. Now, not only is he a doctoral student at the University of Dublin and a sustainability analyst at BiOrbic, Bioeconomy SFI Research Centre, but he also co-funded Carbon Harvesters, a startup focused on sustainable management for farms.

Adapting to climate change: Individuals take action while governments plan

While governments may take the lead in planning and financing climate change adaptation measures, such as incentivizing green infrastructure, individuals currently are most often the ones implementing actions to adapt to climate change, according to new research. The analysis, conducted by an international consortium of researchers from 20 institutions, including Penn State, in 12 countries, published in Nature Climate Change.

Artificial intelligence (AI) opportunities far outweigh the challenges for use at universities, according to Penn State Executive Vice President and Provost Justin Schwartz. He led a panel discussion on AI and its implications for higher education at the Board of Trustees’ Committee on Academic Affairs, Research and Student Life meeting on Oct. 19.
