Maria Herrmann specializes in marine biogeochemistry, an interdisciplinary study of the chemical, physical, geological, and biological processes that determine the chemistry of the ocean. She is a native of Riga, Latvia, growing up on the Baltic Sea. After moving to the U.S. in 1995, she attended Lock Haven University and then Penn State, earning a Ph.D. in Meteorology in 2010. She has been working with large water quality data sets and numerical models to understand how carbon, oxygen, and other elements cycle in coastal waters since 2014.
