Research Summary

Our research focuses on understanding the degradation mechanisms affecting the durability, mechanical, and environmental performance of modern cementitious materials. We do this by primarily investigating the time-evolution of both solid and liquid phases constituting cementitious materials as a consequence of environmental extrinsic factors as well as material intrinsic factors. We use atomic-scale spectroscopy, quantitative x-ray diffraction, 4D x-ray imaging, surface chemistry techniques, and standardized material testing to directly link data about material behavior across multiple scale (nano-to-macro scales). By doing this, we are able to bridge traditional gaps in Civil and Architectural Engineering materials and, hence, understand degradation pathways of multiple cementitious materials.
