My work explores the last 5,000 years of Indigenous systems of governance across North America. In particular, my research is focused on understanding the network foundations of cooperative and collective forms of public goods management. An important part of this research program is an investigation into the relationships between demographic change, social institutions, and socioecological dynamics across the American Southeast from millennia ago to the present. I draw on a range of methodologies including quantitative and computational approaches, AMS dating and chronological modeling, geophysical survey and remote sensing, advanced spatial analyses, geochemical and mineralogical methods, and traditional field survey and excavation.
