Penn State launches artificial intelligence engineering degree and minor

This fall, Penn State will launch a new bachelor of science degree in artificial intelligence engineering, one of the first of its kind in the country. The program, housed in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science within the College of Engineering, will be focused on foundations of AI, encompassing both hardware and software, in addition to applications of AI.

A group of researchers at Penn State recently developed a wearable device capable of accurately tracking chloride ion levels in sweat, which is essential for evaluating hydration status and health conditions like cystic fibrosis and more. Their sensor allows for real-time tracking of an exercising person’s sweat through a hydrogel-based design that allows the device to operate with enhanced sensitivity, accuracy and efficiency, all while being reusable.

Because the role of roots in crop domestication in response to shifting circumstances remains unclear — and because it may be relevant to the present when a warming climate is stressing corn and other crops — a team of researchers led by Penn State plant scientists conducted a study to understand how root traits evolved during corn domestication.
