The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded $1.6 million to Guha Manogharan, associate professor of mechanical engineering and co-director of the Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D) for an additive manufacturing project. Manogharan will conduct research through a subcontract with Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas.

Invasive flathead catfish now top predators in Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania

Flathead catfish, opportunistic predators native to the Mississippi River basin, have the potential to decimate native and recreational fisheries, disrupting ecosystems in rivers where they become established after their introduction or invasion from a nearby river drainage. A team of researchers from Penn State, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission assessed how flatheads are affecting the food web and energy flow in the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania.
$3M grant seeks bioprinted solution for reconstructive surgery’s blood problem

When patients undergo reconstructive surgery for devastating injuries, one of the biggest obstacles surgeons face is restoring blood supply to the repaired tissue. Without a functioning vascular system, new grafts cannot survive. With a new $3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, researchers at Penn State are taking on this challenge by combining advanced 3D bioprinting with a novel surgical method, known as micropuncture.
