The Energy and Environmental Sustainability Laboratories (EESL) are shared multi-user instrumentation facilities managed by the Institute of Energy and the Environment. EESL ties together world-class instrumentation and expertise in a broad array of analytical techniques covering materials in all phases.
Professional laboratory staff also provide:
- Training for researchers and equipment users
- Method development
- Data analysis
Lab services are available to Penn State employees and students, outside academic/research institutions, and business and industry professionals.

Kappe Environmental Engineering Laboratories
The Kappe Environmental Engineering Laboratories include general research lab areas, dedicated microscopy and dark rooms, multiple temperature control rooms, and general-use rooms for instrumentation and preparations.
Laboratory for Isotopes and Metals in the Environment
The Laboratory for Isotopes and Metals in the Environment (LIME) at Penn State University is a world-class facility used for the measurement of isotopic composition, major elements, and trace elemental compositions in a multitude of materials.
Soil Research Cluster Laboratory
The Soil Research Cluster Laboratory (SRCL) provides common and cutting-edge analytical instrumentation in the areas of soil chemistry and biochemistry, soil fertility and nutrient cycling, soil physics, pedology, hydropedology, and various agricultural and environmental ecosystem testing.
