Using This Equipment
For more information and to utilize this equipment, please contact Ekaterina Bazilevskaya.
Equipment full name: Shimadzu TOC-VCPH Total Organic Carbon Analyzer
Description: The TOC-VCPH is a PC controlled high-sensitivity analyzer that measures the amount of total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total inorganic carbon (TIC), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). This analyzer is also used to measure the total nitrogen (TN) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN).
Analytical Method: Our laboratory follows Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 23rd Edition. Carbon, organic and inorganic is analyzed using method 5310B high-temperature combustion and nitrogen, total and dissolved, is analyzed using 5310B high-temperature combustion with TNM-1 Chemiluminescence.
Analysis for TOC, TIC and TN do not require filtration and samples must be stored at 4ºC. DOC, DIC and TDN require filtration using a 0.45µm filter and samples must be stored at 4ºC.
Sample submission: Water samples may be submitted to the water quality laboratory chemist for analysis.
Training: Student researchers and faculty who may be interested in training on how to operate the instrument and interpret the data, please contact the water quality laboratory to schedule training and time on the instrument. While the number of training hours may vary, depending on the student's knowledge and analytical skills, we require a minimum of three training hours prior to allowing the student to independently operate the instrument.
