Penn State Core Facilities

Penn State's Office of the Senior Vice President of Research manages a full list of Shared Core Facilities. Core Facilities provide University facilities and equipment for purchase to individuals inside and outside of Penn State.

Earth and Environmental Systems Institute

Laboratory for Isotopes and Metals in the Environment

The Laboratory for Isotopes and Metals in the Environment (LIME) at Penn State is a world-class facility for the measurement of isotopic ratios/isotopic composition (Ca, Cu, Fe, Li, Mg, Sr, U series, and Pb isotopes), major elements (e.g., Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Si), and trace elemental compositions (e.g., rare earth elements, Pb) in a range of materials.

Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences

Automated Biological Calorimetry Facility

The Automated Biological Calorimetry Facility provides the necessary infrastructure and support for individual investigators to undertake studies of macromolecule binding and folding, as well as protein and lipid quantification.

Cell Culture Facility

The Cell Culture Facility (CCF) delivers hands-on training in mammalian cell culture to students, faculty, staff, and external personnel, while providing researchers across numerous Penn State disciplines access to a twenty first-century lab environment.

Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility

The Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility houses a one-of-a-kind FEI Titan Krios microscope that offers uncompromised data collection for the life sciences while incorporating materials science applications.

CSL Behring Fermentation Facility

The CSL Behring Fermentation Facility is a biotechnology pilot plant capable of research- and pilot-scale production of microbial cells, recombinant proteins, and other microbial products over a wide range of controlled conditions.

Flow Cytometry Facility

The Flow Cytometry Facility is equipped with flow cytometers and cell sorters that enable researchers to examine cell samples within the range of the micron.

Genomics Core Facility

The Genomics Core Facility provides services using several different next-generation sequencing platforms.

High-Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging Facility

The High-Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging Facility houses a Bruker BioSpec 70/30 horizontal magnet and an Agilent 14.1 Tesla vertical magnet.

Metabolomics Facility

The Metabolomics Facility identifies and quantifies the small (<1kDa) molecules present in plant and animal biofluids and tissue extracts, as identifying perturbations in the amounts of particular metabolites can offer insights into the underlying biological processes involved in their production.

Microscopy Facility

The Microscopy Facility specializes in three areas: optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and histology.

Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Core Facility

The Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Core Facility offers highly sensitive and accurate mass spectrometry analysis.

Transgenic Mouse Facility

The Transgenic Mouse Facility provides not only transgenic and gene-targeted mice for use in genetics research.

X-Ray Crystallography Facility

The X-Ray Crystallography Facility provides the necessary infrastructure and support for individual investigators to undertake single crystal X-ray structural studies.

Institute for Computational and Data Sciences

Center for Resilience in Complex Systems

The Penn State Center for Resilience in Complex Systems, co-sponsored by Penn State’s five interdisciplinary research institutes, focuses on studying resilience analysis. In a world of rapid change, we must ensure that complex systems, including medical systems, infrastructure, and security systems, can rebound and even thrive after perturbation, stress, or collapse.

Geoinformatics and Earth Observation Laboratory

The Geoinformatics and Earth Observation Laboratory was established to advance GIScience and cyberscience by developing new computational methodologies and cyberinfrastructure solutions for the analysis of geospatial “big data.” Our focus is on geoscience and Earth science problems with high impact to society, such as environmental hazards and renewable energy.

Center for Big Data Analytics and Discovery Informatics

The Center for Big Data Analytics and Discovery Informatics aims to address emerging challenges in realizing the full potential of big data.

Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics

The Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CCBB) supports research in developing and applying computational biology and bioinformatic approaches across a wide range of biological questions.

Materials Research Institute

Materials Characterization Laboratory

The Materials Characterization Laboratory features an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers and provides an open-access, analytical research facility at Penn State's Materials Research Institute.

Nanofabrication Laboratory

The Nanofabrication Laboratory in the Millennium Science Complex is supported by a dedicated staff and has world-class capabilities in the areas of deposition, etch, lithography, material modification and characterization.
