The Pyroprobe 6200 performs a thermal decomposition process of organic material at elevated temperatures in an anaerobic environment. It involves the cleavage of large complex molecules into smaller, more analytically useful fragments through thermal energy.
It introduces samples that are not GC-amenable in their current state to the ISQ Single Quad GC-MS or TSQ Triple Quad GC-MS/MS. The pyroprobe heats the sample from ambient temperature to up to 1300 °C at rates of 0.01 - 20°C/ms. Fragments released in the process are focused and transferred to the GC for separation and identification via the ISQ or TSQ.
Most organic matrices in the environment are composed of material too large to volatilize at 300 °C and cannot be analyzed by GC/MS. Pyrolysis thermally extracts organic matter from complex matrices. Intact molecules are thermally extracted, or large molecules are broken into fragments that can be separated and identified by GC/MS. Pyrolysis is a destructive technique.
