Recently, and maybe longer, a topic dominating headlines in higher education has focused on some aspect of access. And by access, the focus has been on the ability to afford to attend an institution of higher education. Sometimes there is a hint of helping overcome other barriers to entry, but those all seem to be secondary. Yet, if we truly consider access to higher education, we must include all aspects of our tripartite mission – teaching and learning, research and creative expression, and community or public engagement. Further, we need to consider all variables that impact the ability for individuals, communities, organizations, and businesses to access the rich resources of institutions of higher education. In this talk, I’ll share a perspective on the role community engagement has in helping ensure access to higher education, in all parts of our mission as a Land-Grant University.

Ryan J. Schmiesing, PhD, began his appointment as senior vice provost of external engagement on August 15, 2022, having previously served as vice provost for outreach and engagement. He was named interim senior vice provost in August 2021. As senior vice provost, Ryan leads external engagement strategy that connects Ohio State expertise, scholarship, and service to local, statewide, national, and international communities. He also provides leadership of regional campuses, including strategy and operations in partnership with our campus deans and directors. Prior to the current role, Ryan served as Ohio State’s vice provost for outreach and engagement. In leading our Office of Outreach and Engagement and a portfolio of regional and statewide external engagement initiatives, Ryan has deepened partnerships and enhanced impact across the university and in our communities. Ryan coordinates the Ohio State Energy Partnership internal grants program, which has awarded more than $2.4 million to faculty, staff, and students. He also led the first external review of the regional campuses.
