Channeling decades of experience from on-air reporting for the BBC and as directors of Boffin Media, award-winning British science journalists Sue Nelson and Richard Hollingham share invaluable lessons on what works and what doesn’t when it comes to communicating research via print, audio, and TV. In this two-hour introduction to the media, using examples from their own work and interactive exercises, they will help researchers gain a better understanding of what journalists want and why, the difference between an interview for a podcast versus a newspaper or a TV outlet, as well as provide useful advice on language, tone, content, and presentation. Selected audience volunteers will receive on-the-spot interviews and personal feedback in front of the group.
Boffin Media produces a weekly current affairs documentary with the BBC World Service (winner of a prestigious AIB award), produces the UK and US’s number one astronomy podcast, The Supermassive Podcast, as well as other podcasts on optometry, the environment, space, and Antarctic science. They have made over 100 short films for the European Space Agency highlighting the science and engineering of their missions and produced The Royal Academy for Engineering’s podcast Create the Future, interviewing engineers from across the globe.
