Xiao’s research areas include (1) flow and particle transport in porous media, (2) performances of the built environment and infrastructure (such as levees, slurry walls, geosynthetically-reinforced bridge abutments, subgrade, etc.) under in-service conditions and/or extreme events (such as earthquakes), and (3) performances of civil infrastructures and permafrost coastal erosion due to permafrost degradation in the Arctic and their sociodemographic impacts.
