Research Summary

Dr. Catchmark’s research focuses on the structure and synthesis of cellulose and polysaccharide composite materials. Specific research areas include the biosynthesis of cellulose by bacteria; the co-culturing of microorganisms to create new biomaterials; the development of sustainable polysaccharide nanocomposite materials which exhibit improved strength and barrier properties for applications such as compostable packaging; and polysaccharide composites for biomedical applications such as wound care and 3D printable tissue scaffolds. New areas include research on microplastics biodegradation and biocoagulation for improved water quality. Dr. Catchmark is also an affiliated faculty of the Rock Ethics Institute and conducts research in ethical organizational management, ethical leadership and decision-making and ethics education.
