The change in the design of data centers has been rapid and extensive. Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) has gone from a new idea in 2023 to standard design. The design and deployment of hyperscale projects have proceeded using cooling technology from 2008. A roof full of air-cooled chillers. A hybrid solution is needed. The deployment of AI has created design issues that never need to be addressed prior. The swings in AI power requirements range from idle to 100% and back to idle in seconds plays havoc with Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) systems.
This presentation shows our patented design, Hybrid-Dry/Adiabatic-Cooling (HD/AC). This novel system has unique features in a nominal 14% reduction in power requirements from the turbine to the last motor, and an approx. 50% reduction in energy use.
Biography
Steve Spinazzola is a registered professional engineer in four states and is co-inventor of an advanced data center cooling technology that has six patents and is currently used in data centers all over the world. In 2026 he was awarded two more patents as co-inventor of a novel cooling system for data centers called Hybrid-Dry/Adiabatic-Cooling that provides more power for IT and a lower operating cost.
As Director and Firmwide Manager of Shumate Engineering’s Mission Critical Group, Steve Spinazzola offers more than 45 years of experience in both mechanical design and project management on corporate, mission-critical, educational, health and science, retail, and institutional projects.
