Yiqi Zhang recognized for contributions to human factors engineering in transportation

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Yiqi Zhang, assistant professor of industrial engineering at Penn State, was awarded the Stephanie Binder Young Professional Award by the Surface Transportation Technical Group (STTG) of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES). She accepted the honor at the HFES annual conference held Oct. 10-14 in Atlanta.
The HFES-STTG confers the annual award to a young human factors professional who demonstrates outstanding contributions to transportation human factors, according to the society’s website. The award honors Stephanie Binder, who died at age 35 in 2011, for her efforts to combat distracted driving. Binder was a human factors engineer at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“I am very honored to receive the Stephanie Binder Young Professional Award and am grateful for the acknowledgement of my work,” Zhang said. “Winning this award would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of my fellow colleagues. I will keep up the good work and continue to serve the surface transportation research community.”
Zhang’s research interests include intelligent transportation systems. Her current focus is on human-vehicle interaction challenges and their implications in designing connected vehicle systems and autonomous vehicle systems. She is also affiliated with the Larson Transportation Institute at Penn State.
