UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Millennium Café, held every Tuesday by the Materials Research Institute (MRI) featuring two talks by Penn State researchers that serve as an exchange of ideas and solutions, will hold three special sessions in October and November.

In October, attendees will get a preview of Penn State’s marquee materials research event, Materials Day, to be held this year on Oct. 20 and 21. There will be two café talks featuring the chairs for each of the Materials Day breakout sessions that are focused on four different Penn State research institutes. On Oct. 4, Vasant Honavar, professor of information sciences and technology; Huck Chair in Biomedical Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence; director, Center for Artificial Intelligence Foundations and Scientific Applications; and associate director, Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS), will preview the ICDS breakout topic “Artificial Intelligence for Accelerating Materials Discovery, Design, and Synthesis.” Also on Oct. 4, Jian Yang, professor of biomedical engineering, will present on the Huck Institutes for the Life Sciences breakout topic "Regenerative Medicine and Engineering.”

On Oct. 11, Martin Sliwinski, Gregory H. Wolf Professor of Aging Studies, professor of human development and family studies, and director of the Center for Healthy Aging at Penn State, will preview the Social Science Research Institute breakout topic "Wearables and Implantables for Health.” Also on Oct. 11, Juliana Vasco-Correa, assistant professor of agricultural and biological engineering, will present on the Institutes of Energy and the Environment’s (IEE) breakout topic "Materials and Processes Challenges and Opportunities in the Transformation of Carbon and Hydrogen Economies.”

On Nov. 1, in lieu of the café, there will be an open house and poster session for the core facilities of Huck, IEE and MRI where attendees will learn about the variety of resources available to support their research and network with the staff of the three institutes. All Millennium Café events are free and open to the Penn State community, include coffee and breakfast pastries, and are held in the third floor Café Commons of the Millennium Science Complex at University Park. No registration for the café is required but registration is required for Materials Day. Both events are produced by the Materials Research Institute.
