UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Huanyu “Larry” Cheng, Dorothy Quiggle Career Development Assistant Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics in the Penn State College of Engineering, recently received a Humboldt Research Fellowship.

The program provides funding for “highly-qualified scientists and scholars” who have completed their doctorates in the last 12 years to lead a research program at a German institution of their choice, according to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation website.

“I hope to collaborate closely with other researchers both at my host university and at other German institutions,” Cheng said. “It will be a good starting point that might open the door to research opportunities across Europe.”

Researchers can spend six to 18 months at their host university pursuing an original, innovative research outline with paid living expenses and a stipend. The fellowship can be completed over three stays for several months each or one longer stay. Cheng plans to begin his fellowship in the next two years.

Cheng’s host is Universität Leipzig, where Marius Grundmann, Universitat Leipzig professor of physics and earth science and head of the Felix Bloch Institute for Solid State Physics, will serve as an adviser to connect Cheng with other researchers. Cheng plans to continue his current research portfolio, which focuses on advanced sensors and wearable technology.

“I am looking forward to building a network with other Humboldt fellows to help one another succeed in the fellowship, with the hope we can become lifelong research partners and colleagues,” Cheng said.

Humboldt fellows number over 30,000 worldwide.
