Engineer appointed to international advisory board on carbon capture

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Novo Nordisk Foundation CO2 Research Center has appointed Bruce Logan, Evan Pugh University Professor and Kappe Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Penn State, to its advisory committee. The center focuses its research on carbon capture, storage and reuse.  

Logan's term on the seven-member committee began May 1 and will continue for three years.  

Funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the Denmark-based research center was created in 2021 to reach new scientific understanding of and develop new technologies for capturing and converting carbon dioxide for storage and reuse.  

As a committee member, Logan will advise leadership on the performance, strategies, international reputation and competitiveness of the center; assess its progress by attending annual meetings and reviewing annual progress reports; and serve as an international ambassador. 

The center has a “hub and satellite” model, where Aarhus University in Aarhus, Denmark serves as the center’s hub with five resident research groups, with affiliate research groups at six other universities. 

“The foundation is making a huge investment of $94 million to make game-changing solutions relative to carbon dioxide emissions, capture and storage or reuse,” Logan said. “It is an honor to be named an adviser for such a foundation due to the importance of the topic and the potential to advise on projects that can address the root causes of climate change.” 

Logan serves as associate director of the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment. His research focuses on renewable energy technologies, wastewater treatment and bioremediation. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the International Water Association and the Water Environment Federation.
