UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences’ John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering will host its annual research showcase, “Rising to the Challenge,” from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Graduate State College Regency Ballroom in State College.
The showcase is a networking opportunity for students and industry leaders to explore research taking place in the department.
“The world today is at a crossroads,” said Sanjay Srinivasan, department head and professor of petroleum and natural gas engineering. “The thirst for energy continues to be on the rise with the emergence of new economies and the overall quest to improve the standard of living of populations everywhere. This craving for energy has to be balanced against the climate impacts caused by the production and consumption of traditional forms of energy. These are the same challenges that confront our department, and this showcase is both a call to action as well as a showcase of the research that is currently being performed in the department to address those challenges.”
Some featured faculty talks include:
- “Challenges, Discoveries and Opportunities in Energy Systems,” by Feifei Shi, assistant professor of energy engineering.
- “Development of New Processes, Materials and Technologies for Nontraditional Feedstocks,” by Ezgi Toraman, assistant professor of energy engineering.
Talks will be followed by question-and-answer sessions. Attendees are encouraged to attend and interact with the presenters.
“Our students and researchers are working on very important challenges that have so many aspects and side-angles,” said Srinivasan. “Their pursuits, while tremendously exciting, can nevertheless be overwhelming. By participating in the showcase and interacting with the presenters, you will instill a sense of optimism and purpose for their efforts. Such encouragement can lead to even more significant breakthroughs.
