UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering (EME) will host its annual research showcase from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April. 27, in the HUB-Robeson Center on the Penn State University Park campus.

The showcase is a networking opportunity for students and industry leaders to explore research taking place in the department. The free, in-person event will be held in the Flex Theater and rooms 132 and 134 with the option to attend online via Zoom.

“I am excited to invite the Penn State community to our first in-person research showcase in two years,” said Sanjay Srinivasan, department head and professor of petroleum and natural gas engineering. “I encourage everyone to attend, either in-person or online, and see how Penn State is leading the way with innovative research and analysis dedicated to solving the challenges facing energy systems the world over.”

The event focuses on faculty research in the afternoon, with 15-minute spotlight presentations from new EME members followed by question and answer sessions.

Faculty spotlight talks include:

  • “Making a materials difference to renewable energy transition: The role of advanced modeling and simulation,” by Nelson Dzade, assistant professor of energy and mineral engineering
  • "Multiscale computing for engineering porous materials," by Yashar Mehmani, assistant professor of energy and mineral engineering
  • “Geochemical controls on subsurface carbon management,” by Anne Menefee, assistant professor of energy and mineral engineering
  • “Leveraging data analytics to understand the impact of climate change on electricity demand,” by Renee Obringer, assistant professor of energy and mineral engineering

A panel discussion on energy transition focused on carbon management and the critical minerals will follow the faculty spotlight presentations.

In addition to showcasing faculty research, student research will be presented during a lightning talk session in the morning and the annual student poster exhibition and reception which closes the event.
