Hugh McPherson, a fifth-generation farmer in southeastern York County, has stopped growing the perennial favorite McIntosh apple and has switched to varieties that fare better in warmer climates.
McIntosh apples love cool nights in their growing season, and in recent years, nighttime temperatures have not dipped, rendering what should be a crisp fruit into a mushy one.
