Bernard M. Gordon Learning Factory capstone project winners announced

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The College of Engineering Bernard M. Gordon Learning Factory showcases for the fall 2021 semester took place on Dec. 7, 2021, in person and from Dec. 10 to 17, 2021, virtually. Engineering students from the senior capstone design courses in biomedical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, engineering design, industrial engineering, materials science and mechanical engineering presented the culmination of their semester-long projects at the events. 

Students completed the projects, intended to present solutions for real-world engineering problems and design challenges, for their senior capstone design courses. The projects were sponsored by nearly 60 groups in academia, industry and government.

Two teams received the first place Best Project Award:

  • “Sustainable Use of Reclaimed Fiber Product from Recycled Paper Manufacturing” for Team Ten LLC by Neal Desai, Brandon Wehbey and Youngsuk Youn, advised by Allen Kimel, associate teaching professor of materials science and engineering 

  • “Variable Blade Angle Pump Impeller” for Flowserve Corporation by Carter Houseknecht, Jackson Quedenfeld, Jordan Smith and Vincenzo Zook, advised by Alexander Rattner, Dorothy Quiggle Career Development Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering  

Second place for best project went to:

  • “3D-Printed Balance Bike” for The Bernard M. Gordon Learning Factory by Jackson Galichon, Daniel Gerhart, Adam Schifsky and Michael Whelihan, advised by Sean Knecht, associate teaching professor of engineering design  

  • “Shell 2, Eco-Marathon” for Shell by Oluwaseyi Faparusi, Jonathan Rock, Emma Snelling and Robert Wanker, advised by Gary Neal, director of mechanical engineering capstone design projects and instructor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Larson Transportation Institute 

Third place for best project went to:

  • “Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Tuft Data Processing” for Lockheed Martin by Marwan Fayed, Samuel Johnson, Kyle Ostrowski and Xiaoyun Wang, advised by Kyusun Choi, teaching professor of computer science and engineering 

  • “K-1 Lawn and Garden Sprayer Assembly Process” for Green Garden Products Company, LLC by Jomanah AlGhamdi, Cezar Krysztofiak, Yoora Song and Seraphina Thorpe, advised by Charlie Purdum, professor of practice and director of industry relations in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering  

The winners of the virtual showcase Best Poster category were:

  • First place: “The Cinnamon List – Crowdsourcing an NLP Energy Dictionary” for Electric Power Research Institute by Hunter Schuler, Day Saparov, Hanfei He, Johnny Jiang, Jonathan Villei and Sokhna Wane, advised by Al Verbanec, assistant teaching professor of computer science and engineering 

  • Second place: “Advanced Air-Coupled Heat Exchanger for Mobile Battery Thermal Management System” for Mainstream Engineering Corporation by Patrick Bradley, Taher Soliman and Joseph Bolner, advised by Alexander Rattner, Dorothy Quiggle Career Development Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering  

  • Third place: “Additive Manufactured Hip Broach Instrumentation” for Stryker by Emily Boll, Vanessa Dale, Noah Heimbaugh, Emily Kehler and Nick Zhang, advised by Alexander Rattner, Dorothy Quiggle Career Development Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering 

Three teams received awards for Best Video: 

  • First place: “Penn State Human Powered Vehicle Team” for American Society of Mechanical Engineers by Jacob Buckwalter, Sean Neil, Luke Livingston and Giovanni Riggi, advised by Gary Neal, director of mechanical engineering capstone design projects and instructor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Larson Transportation Institute 

  • Second place: “Additive Manufactured Hip Broach Instrumentation” for Stryker by Emily Boll, Vanessa Dale, Noah Heimbaugh, Emily Kehler and Nick Zhang, advised by Lyndsey Hylbert, adjunct instructor of biomedical engineering  

  • Third place: “Modular Hybrid Power System for UAVs” for Lockheed Martin by Masen Nartatez, Paige Vernon, Jacob Smartwood and Paul Kim, advised by Donghai Wang, professor of mechanical engineering and chemical engineering 

One team placed in the Best K-12 Engagement category:

  • “Nuclear Test Loop Fast-Exchange Design” for Exelon Generation by Shelby Bauer, Ziyuan Qin, Allison Wissler and Ryan Wright, advised by Sean Knecht, associate teaching professor of engineering design  

Two teams received People’s Choice awards:

  • Online people’s choice: “Additive Manufactured Hip Broach Instrumentation” for Stryker by Emily Boll, Vanessa Dale, Noah Heimbaugh, Emily Kehler and Nick Zhang, advised by Lyndsey Hylbert, adjunct instructor of biomedical engineering  

  • BP People’s Choice: “Vehicle Configuration Determination” for Volvo Group Trucks by Xinru Yang, Kaiming Cui, Chaewun Chun and Nada Alaskary, advised by Sean Knecht, associate teaching professor of engineering design  

Three sponsors received Best Corporate Sponsor awards as voted by students:
