Architectural engineering professor honored by global society

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — John Messner, Charles and Elinor Matts Professor of Architectural Engineering, received the 2022 Computing in Civil Engineering Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the nation’s oldest engineering society. The award recognizes an ASCE member who has made an outstanding contribution to the application of computers to the practice of civil engineering, according to the ASCE website.
Messner was recognized for “his leading role in the advancement of Building Information Modeling (BIM) research, development of guides and standards for BIM implementation in the construction industry worldwide and mentoring of students and junior researchers in the field of computing in civil engineering,” according to the society.
Messner’s work is focused on advanced modeling of building and infrastructure projects, as well as expanding visualization technologies to improve project design and construction education.
“I am very honored to receive this award and grateful to all of the current and previous students and collaborators at Penn State who have contributed to our efforts in modeling, visualization and simulation,” Messner said.
Messner previously chaired both the Computing Division and the Visualization, Information Management, and Simulation Committee of ASCE. He will be honored at an upcoming ASCE Computing Division conference with a plaque and a cash prize.
