EESL Labs Capabilities and Applications Overview

In this introductory webinar, the presenters will highlight:

  • Applications in materials, energy, and environmental sciences, including polymer and coal characterization, trace detection of agricultural chemicals and contaminants of emerging concern, and plant metabolite studies – Sara Lincoln, Organics Lab
  • Applications in archaeology, ancient genetics, paleoecology and soil-carbon cycling – Brendan Culleton, Radiocarbon Lab

Organics Lab

The lab is equipped with high-resolution mass spectrometers, which include, high-resolution LC-Orbitrap and GC-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry and pyrolysis-GCMS that enable the study of organic matter ranging from low molecular weight compounds to large macromolecules.

Radiocarbon Lab

The lab is equipped with an NEC 1.5SDH-1 0.5 MV Compact Accelerator Mass Spectrometer and a dedicated sample preparation lab equipped to process carbon-bearing materials including charcoal, bone, shell, soil organic matter, and other sample types.  

Center for Quantitative Imaging

The lab is equipped with industrial micro/nano X-ray CT scanners, which include:

  • GE v|tome|x L300 scanner with dual X-ray sources, walk-in cabinet, and adaptable axes motions, allowing for imaging samples ranging from 500 mm to less than 1mm in diameter with resolutions approaching the nm scale.
  • Zeiss Versa 620, a true nano-scale imaging system.  The Versa, as configured, is optimally designed to image small samples, ranging from 10 mm to fractions of a mm in diameter, with resolutions near 100 nm or less.
