Andrew Warner

Thematic Area Lead, Water and Biogeochemical Cycles

Andrew Warner is the Director of the Penn State Water Initiative, Director of the Pennsylvania Water Resources Research Center, and an Affiliate Associate Research Professor in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management. He has a 35-year career developing and implementing innovations in environmental, conservation, and multi-purpose water management projects, as well as in research, facilitation, teaching, and policy.  Warner has worked in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, including 16 years with The Nature Conservancy’s Global Freshwater Program, during which time he designed, launched and was TNC lead on the Sustainable Rivers Program.  This national partnership between TNC and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) continues to develop and advance innovation for changing dam operations to restore and protect ecosystems, while maintaining and enhancing other project benefits.  In 2016-2017, Warner was selected and served as a Senior Fellow at the USACE’s Institute for Water Resources. Through his work, he has helped to restore and conserve river, floodplain, wetland, and groundwater systems on more than 70 projects across the United States, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and has advanced related innovations in technical solutions, methods and tools, and policy.

Warner’s research focuses on science and policy innovations related to the restoration of aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, water management and climate resilience, water insecurity and human health, and the water-energy-food nexus.
